The Medicago Genome Initiative: a model legume database
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Medicago Genome Initiative (MGI) is a database of EST sequences of the model legume MEDICAGO: truncatula. The database is available to the public and has resulted from a collaborative research effort between the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation and the National Center for Genome Resources to investigate the genome of M.truncatula. MGI is part of the greater integrated MEDICAGO: functional genomics program at the Noble Foundation (http://www.noble.org ), which is taking a global approach in studying the genetic and biochemical events associated with the growth, development and environmental interactions of this model legume. Our approach will include: large-scale EST sequencing, gene expression profiling, the generation of M.truncatula activation-tagged and promoter trap insertion mutants, high-throughput metabolic profiling, and proteome studies. These multidisciplinary information pools will be interfaced with one another to provide scientists with an integrated, holistic set of tools to address fundamental questions pertaining to legume biology. The public interface to the MGI database can be accessed at http://www.ncgr.org/research/mgi.

Post-genomics studies of developmental processes in legume seeds.
Legume seeds are an important source of food and feed, and have been principally studied with a view to optimizing the composition of reserve substances starch, oligosaccharides, oil, and protein. The availability of genome and transcribed genome sequences for the legume model species Medicago truncatula and Lotus japonicus has stimulated the application of the -omics technologies to understand...
متن کاملMedicago PhosphoProtein Database: a repository for Medicago truncatula phosphoprotein data
The ability of legume crops to fix atmospheric nitrogen via a symbiotic association with soil rhizobia makes them an essential component of many agricultural systems. Initiation of this symbiosis requires protein phosphorylation-mediated signaling in response to rhizobial signals named Nod factors. Medicago truncatula (Medicago) is the model system for studying legume biology, making the study ...
متن کاملMtDB: a database for personalized data mining of the model legume Medicago truncatula transcriptome
In order to identify the genes and gene functions that underlie key aspects of legume biology, researchers have selected the cool season legume Medicago truncatula (Mt) as a model system for legume research. A set of >170 000 Mt ESTs has been assembled based on in-depth sampling from various developmental stages and pathogen-challenged tissues. MtDB is a relational database that integrates Mt t...
متن کاملThree sequenced legume genomes and many crop species: rich opportunities for translational genomics.
This year marks the essential completion of the genome sequences of soybean (Glycine max), barrel medic (Medicago truncatula), and birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus japonicus). The impact of these assembled, annotated genomes will be enormous. Birdsfoot trefoil and barrel medic, both forage crops, are the preeminent laboratory plants used in legume research. Monetarily, soybean is the most valuable prot...
متن کاملSmall RNA pathways and diversity in model legumes: lessons from genomics
Small non-coding RNAs (smRNA) participate in the regulation of development, cell differentiation, adaptation to environmental constraints and defense responses in plants. They negatively regulate gene expression by degrading specific mRNA targets, repressing their translation or modifying chromatin conformation through homologous interaction with target loci. MicroRNAs (miRNA) and short-interfe...
